History

Harrow has its origins in three ancient parishes: Harrow on the Hill, Great Stanmore and Little Stanmore (also known as Whitchurch).

Harrow was created in 1934 under the Middlesex Review Order 1934 as an urban area of Middlesex, formed by the amalgamation of the former areas of Harrow-on-the-Hill Urban District, Wealdstone Urban District and most of Hendon Rural District.

In 1965 the City Borough was abolished and its former borough transferred from Middlesex to Greater London under the London Government Act 1963 to form the London Borough of Harrow. It is the only London borough that exactly replicates the unchanging boundaries of the former single district.

Extremely low crime rate

Harrow can claim to be one of the safest boroughs in all of London, with a much lower crime rate compared to the London average.

Data from 2017-2018 reported that Harrow ranked 28th out of 32 London boroughs in terms of the number of criminal offences committed, with only one murder recorded during this period.

According to a 2018 survey by the Office for National Statistics, Harrow is the 'happiest' borough in London, scoring above the UK average.
